Part of making a home homey is filling it with beautiful items that have value for the dwellers. This is one reason I like having decorative items that have a true meaning. A few years ago, the repurposed church bench became a popular item for DIYers because they were easily accessible as churches were changing their seating styles to be more comfortable for church goers. Church benches are a plenty these days, and this one has found a home with us.
Of course the bench needed a little love to fit perfectly into our home, but the imperfections were nothing a little Annie Sloan Chalk Paint could not cure.
Our church bench reminds me of simpler times: all day church services, sleeping babies being cooled with fans provided by funeral homes, choirs with voices like thunderous angels, and hymns that change the soul. For these reasons it does not have a "style," it has history. Sometimes, actually most times, history is more important that initial aesthetics. I am glad my children will have a piece of that history at home.
