COMMON DESIGN MISTAKES WE DON'T WANT YOU TO MAKE

So, you all know that we don’t always follow the rules, but we often see clients making the same mistakes with their spaces. Here are the top five design mistakes we want you to avoid.

5. Have a Realistic Budget.

While this is not necessary a "design mistake," honestly designers can’t help a client who does not have a realistic budget. Options for furniture and home décor come in a range of price points, so it's always best to set financial parameters so that a designer can present realistic options.

4.  Following Design Trends.

Trends are just that, trends.  Just because rustic, farmhouse style is popular today doesn’t mean you have to put in in your home. It’s more important that you love what you have in your space.  Trends come and go.

3. The Same Color Everything.

Yep, we see it all the time, clients--when left to their own devices--purchase everything in the same color.  From room to room, everything is the same color (brown, black, or gray): the couch, the bed, the curtains, the walls.  Please know that everything does not have to be the same color to work together.

2. Hanging Curtains Incorrectly.

This is a personal pet peeve.  If your curtain rod is too low, if your curtains are too short, if your curtain rod is not long enough and if your curtain panels are not wide enough this tip is for you.  Curtains should float, kiss or slightly puddle on the floor.  Let’s get this corrected ASAP if you are an offender. Blogger, Emily Henderson has a great article on “Hanging Curtains All Wrong.”  We couldn’t have said it better.

1. Not Taking Measurements.

It pains me to see a space with furniture that is either too small or too big.  This happens more often than not.  People start shopping thinking they have a sense of their space only to make purchases that are not the right fit.  That’s why it is important to develop a space plan. Measure your space and measure your furniture pieces to make sure things will fit nicely.

Hopefully you all can use these tips as you design your spaces.  If not, call us!
