One question I often hear when I tell people to place their coats on the hall tree in our mudroom is "What is a hall tree?" I usually answer with a visual, physical demonstration. I sit back for the next question, "Where did you get this thing?" Proudly tell them that my husband, Burt built it as his first solo project for our home. They usually don’t believe me. But they don’t have to believe me. I remember the many nights he spent in the garage, the trips to The Home Depot or Lowe's (whichever was closer) and all the darn dust in the garage.
Here is a visual recount of his hard work. I must say, that every day I come home and place my coat on the rack, I am proud of my man.

When a home is filled with items that bring joy, home truly becomes a place where the heart resides. The hall tree in my mudroom speaks to this sentiment perfectly. It is the first item Burt made for our home. I see it as a physical representation of his love for me. Each day I come home from work, I am often stressed. I open the door to my mudroom and see the structure holding tiny children’s coats, shoes, and other items and I know that I am among my people and I am grateful.
