A well-designed room offers a variety of patterns and colors to make a design interesting. No matter the vibe one is trying to achieve, a method for mixing patterns must be used to get the best results. Here is our tried and true rule of thumb.
At Outfitting Spaces we often use the pattern scale of Large Showstopper, Medium Bridge, and Small Scale. Simple enough to remember, right? We believe this scale gives us the best results without much effort.
THE SHOWSTOPPER
Large sized patterns are often the showstoppers. They are the pattern most see first and think about even after they have left the space. Large patterns act as a foundation for other smaller patterns to build. Many bold florals, animal prints, Ikat, and some checks patterns fit as showstoppers.
THE BRIDGE
Medium sized patterns are a great stepping stone down from large prints and up from small prints. They bridge the scale of patterns to create cohesion and balance. There are not many designs that look good without a medium sized print in the mix. Think of dots, stripes, strokes, and checks when trying to bridge your designs.
THE SMALL ONE
Small prints are a great way to add dimension and whimsy to a space. They provide the necessary white or negative space needed within a design for the space to seem fresh and not muddy or overdone.
Hopefully this formula helps you achieve a well-designed home. Please share your success with us.
